The Office of the Federal Public Defender for the Middle and Western Districts of Louisiana was established in 1993. The office consists of the Lafayette headquarters and two divisional offices in Shreveport and Baton Rouge. Office staff include attorneys, investigators and other administrative personnel. Federal Defender attorneys are appointed to represent persons accused of federal criminal law violations and are unable to afford private counsel in accordance with the Criminal Justice Act, 18 USC 3006A. The criminal charges defended are diverse, including drug crimes, tax law violations, firearms offenses, bank robbery, racketeering, bank fraud, environmental crimes, misdemeanors, and computer-based offenses. Federal Defenders represent their clients in the U.S. District Court, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, and the United States Supreme Court. |
